☆ Judge approves NAR settlement on broker commissions

On Tuesday, Judge Stephen Bough granted preliminary approval to the $418 million antitrust settlement in a Missouri court. Housing experts say the settlement may effectively demolish the current real estate business model. Under the terms of settlement, which was announced in March, sellers’ agents will no longer be required to offer commissions to buyers’ agents. While the settlement does not explicitly spell the end of the traditional 6% commission, split between the seller’s agent and the buyer’s agent, commissions are expected to fall because they will become competitive and negotiable. If sellers are no longer paying buyers’ agents, homebuyers may be on the hook to pay their broker directly.

New York CNN —Columbia University student organizers were given a midnight deadline Tuesday to resolve talks with the university over dismantling the pro-Palestinian encampment that has cast its campus into days of turmoil and unease, the school’s president said. Though the outcome of the negotiations is still unclear, Columbia President Minouche Shafik said the university would consider “alternative options” if no agreement was reached by midnight. As of 12:10 a.m., the NYPD had not been asked by Columbia University to respond to the campus, a police spokesperson told CNN. Harvard University has closed Harvard Yard and officials at the university suspended a pro-Palestinian student organization for allegedly violating school policies. The encampment at Columbia University was lively early this week, with many students congregating in circles, eating and talking.

CNN —Kia has recalled 427,407 of its Telluride SUVs because they can roll away while in park. Demand for the Telluride has been so high that in some years, Kia couldn’t produce them fast enough. According to the NHTSA report, though, a main component of the SUV’s steering wheel may have been improperly assembled on the recalled vehicles. The report said affected vehicles could make a grinding noise when the damage occurs. All affected Telluride owners should bring their cars to a Kia dealer to get updated electronic parking brake software installed.

CNN —The Federal Trade Commission is investigating TikTok for its data and security practices, two sources told CNN on the condition of anonymity. The agency is also investigating whether TikTok violated a portion of the FTC Act, which prohibits “unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce,” the sources said. The FTC could bring a suit against TikTok in the coming weeks, according to the sources. The FTC probe comes as TikTok faces an existential threat in the US. CNN —The Federal Aviation Administration will take a closer look at safety at United Airlines after a string of nearly a dozen incidents this month, the airline said in a memo Friday. While no passengers were injured, the incident was just one in a line of recent mishaps on United flights – all involving Boeing jets. In just the last month, another United Boeing plane spewed flames from an engine after taking off, one slid off the runway, one lost a wheel during takeoff, and yet another trailed hydraulic fluid. In a statement, the FAA said its “safety assurance system routinely monitors all aspects of an airline’s operation. Still, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has said he would look into the possibility of buying more jets from Airbus, Boeing’s European competitor.

The finalized rule will require public companies to share how climate change might hurt their businesses.
